I-IMAGINE: A Restorative Framework for Transforming Conflict & Culture

About the Book

I-IMAGINE is a conflict transformation process designed for groups, schools, and organizations.

Every act of restoration begins with imagination.

Conflict does more than strain relationships — it quietly narrows our perspective. Over time, familiar patterns begin to feel inevitable, and new possibilities become difficult to see.

Before we can repair relationships, we must first imagine that restoration is possible. Before accountability comes the capacity to imagine accountability. Before communities can build new patterns, they must first believe new patterns are within reach.

I-IMAGINE is an interdisciplinary restorative framework that integrates restorative justice, neurobiology, embodiment, systems thinking, and collaborative facilitation to help groups move beyond conflict and toward healthier relationships. Through eight practical movements — Intention, Inquiry, Mapping Conflict, Accountability, Generating Possibilities, Implementing a Plan, New Norms, and Encourage & Empower — participants learn not only to navigate conflict and relational breakdown, but to cultivate the conditions for connection, accountability, relational creativity, and lasting cultural change.

Filled with embodied practices, facilitation guidance, visual tools, reflection exercises, and real-world examples, I-IMAGINE equips educators, leaders, practitioners, organizations, and communities with a practical methodology for transforming conflict into opportunities for learning, repair, connection, and collective flourishing.

Michael Lockaby, MSW, JD, is a restorative justice practitioner with over 40 years of experience in mediation and an advocate of embodied social justice. As a social worker, he worked in the nonprofit sector, assisting systemically marginalized groups in crafting systems for economic growth. As an attorney, he founded a human rights law firm and practiced holistic law, using both litigation and mediation to help hundreds of people “make better choices in difficult situations.” Michael is a recognized innovator in alternative dispute resolution and a national award-winning mediator. He has served as a court-appointed special master, conference speaker, and law professor. He has worked in international human rights, including on a large-scale project in Africa helping to establish rule-of-law capacity in Namibia, for which he was recognized with an award by the United Nations. As a community leader, he has served on many boards and founded a healing arts center. As a world citizen born in Providence, Rhode Island, and having traveled extensively, he has lived in Ghana, West Africa, where he was inducted into a local tribe. He also lives part-time in Puerto Rico, where he advocates against the vestiges of colonialism.
